This new production Winchester USA Ammunition 5.56x45mm NATO 62 Grain M855 SS109 Penetrator Full Metal Jacket is loaded to NATO specifications. Currently, Winchester manufactures this ammo for the United States Military. It is not intended for use in bolt-action rifles chambered in 223 Remington. Brass cases are reloadable. The full metal jacket bullets feature a steel core and green penetrating tip. Their cases are brand new, made of brass, and only slightly discolored around the shoulders because they have been strengthened without being polished through a heat treatment called annealing. Their Boxer primers are non-corrosive and sensitive enough for any firing pin to ignite. What makes the M855 penetrator unique? The green paint on the bullet’s tip indicates that its core isn’t entirely made out of lead. Beneath the jacket is a solid steel tip called a “penetrator,” and penetration is what it does. The M855 bullet pierces steel plating and other barriers with relative ease at close to medium range and penetrates deeply into soft tissue. The M855 can also split into two sections as it breaks through soft tissue, thus creating two discrete wound channels. What type of barrel is M855 ammunition designed for? A barrel twist of 1:9 or 1:8 will give you the best accuracy with the M855’s 62-grain bullet. Still, a 1:7 barrel twist certainly won’t disappoint you while you’re defensive shooting, target shooting, or training.
